Clarkesville - Better Hometown

Clarkesville, orginally incorporated as a village, became the county seat of Habersham County in 1823.  The city was named in honor of General John C. Clarke, the son of the governor of Georgia, Elijah Clarke.  Clarkesville was a resort town for many years, catering to coastal residents trying to escape the heat and of low-lying areas.  Clarkesville has undergone a beautiful restoration of its downtown area.
